Celebrity Guest; Casey MacGill July 31 @ 1pm pdt Class Title: How to Scat Sing

Workshop Description: Join us for an evening with the King of Swing Casey MacGill as he walks us through the finer points of learning to scat sing. This style dates back to the early days of jazz when singers would mimic the instruments of the band as they soloed the contents of their soul. There’s no instrument like the human voice, learn how to create sounds and express your heart through scat singing!

Bio Casey MacGill plays rhythm on the ukulele with a super-solid feel supporting his stellar vocals. Whether it’s his classic swing strum, the groovy shu”e strum, or the sensuous rumba strum, he brings a deep pulse to the music. MacGill began strumming during the folk music scare of the early 60’s, busked movie lines for Easy Rider, appeared on the Tonight Show, the infamous Gong Show, the movie Frances, and opened the Broadway show Swing! playing his uke.   He shares his intuitive feel for the instrument with audiences and students all over the world at festivals and workshops, and demonstrates why It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing.

June 18 @12pm PDT- Brook Adams We are very excited to be having Oregon's sweetheart Brook Adams joining us at the Starlight Academy as our Celebrity Guest in June. Brook has been teaching and touring for many years, has a fantastic disposition and will be sharing some insights into a little easy listening rock, otherwise known as "Yacht Rock", the kind of music you'd be listening to while cruising around the port on your yacht. If you haven't met Brook yet, you're sure to remember him after this event.

Workshop Description: - Yacht Rock On Ukes

A class for people who like to sing. 'Smooth' pop music of the 70s and 80s by artists such as Doobies, Bee Gees, Christopher Cross, and more. I'll demonstrate chords, licks, and tricks to make the songs come alive, and of course we'll work out fun parts and sing a lot. I have charts. All Levels, drop-in.

About Brook Adams:

Brook is an atavistic dinosaur of 20th century pop. His songs evoke a timeless blend of soul, surf & psychedelia. He is a skilled player on guitar and ukulele. He used to do a show called "Abbey Road On Ukulele". As a youth, he liked the Guess Who, Sly & The Family Stone, Cat Stevens, and John Prine. Brook has two surf music albums, "Surf Monster" and "Surficana" with his band, "El Borko ¡Surf!". His solo albums "Ready To Burn" and "Fountain Of Love" explore the idea that people are basically good, and that in every heart there is a source of strength, courage and love.
